A Family Adventure Right Outside Your Door
Looking for something different to do this weekend? Cape Town is taking on cities across the world in the City Nature Challenge, taking place over the long weekend from Friday, 24 April to Monday, 27 April 2026.Turn time in your garden, a walk in a local park, or a visit to Tygerberg Nature Reserve into a real-life nature treasure hunt for the whole family. Record as many wildlife sightings as you can and upload your photos to the iNaturalist app during this period.
Getting started is simple:

- Head outside with the kids
- Photograph any plants, animals, or insects you find
- Upload your discoveries and see what experts identify

The City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, has encouraged residents to takeup the opportunity to explore, learn, and reconnect with the natural environment around them. Every find counts, from birds and bugs to fynbos, feathers, shells, or tracks. You don’t need to go far, some of the best discoveries are right on your doorstep.
With free access to many of the City’s nature reserves over the long weekend, it’s a great opportunity to spend time together outdoors while contributing to a global citizen science project.
