Welgemoed in Focus | February

Welgemoed CID teams continue to maintain proactive oversight and coordination across the suburb. Throughout February, safety operations, municipal liaison, and greening initiatives remained active and responsive.

A Message from Anika Nell, Chairperson of Welgemoed CID

“A great deal has taken place in Welgemoed since our last monthly review of January.

We are very pleased to report that the Welgemoed CID did not experience a single successful House Break-in during February. We did however log 1 Attempted Break-in and 6 other Non serious incidents. Our teams remain vigilant and we appreciate the dedication shown by our teams in serving our community.

We have in addition started seeing the City of Cape Town’s  Neighborhood Safety Officers operating in the WCID area. As Welgemoed continues to function as a busy thoroughfare within the northern suburbs, this added support strengthens By-law enforcement, and complements the  hard work already being done by WCID’s Public Safety Officers.

We have noticed a concerning trend in our adjacent suburb areas, where there is an increase in security incidents. We are supporting the Door de Kraal West sector by means of linking them to our monitoring network. Door de Kraal West residents have covered the expenses for the extension and will help respond to the recent incidents. We are fortunate to be able to support our neighboring suburb areas, and we hope to see a quick impact.

Many residents will also be aware of recent public commentary directed at the WCID which included the circulation of personal content, the disclosure of private information, and serious allegations directed at individual Board members and staff. In my previous message to residents, I confirmed that the City of Cape Town, has been informed in line with our governance obligations and we will keep our residents updated of events as they develop.

Monthly Safety & Operational Snapshot

The snapshot above reflects verified incidents and service matters recorded during the month. These figures inform WCID’s operational focus, coordination efforts, and forward planning.

Community Safety Snapshot

WCID would like to thank the many First Responders who have responded to emergencies, logged on the SOS WhatsApp groups in recent weeks. The assistance provided to neighbors in moments of need is invaluable. These groups form an important layer of our collective safety effort, and we are encouraged by the calm and practical response shown by the community.

 Reported Incidents:

• 2 February – Theft from motor vehicle – Patrys Street (13:30–15:00). Tools stolen.
• 8 February – Armed robbery of delivery bike – Intersection of Kommissaris and Pandoer Streets. The matter was reported to WCID and a SAPS case is pending.
• 10 February – A WCID surveillance camera was stolen from a boundary wall in Saffraan Street while a second camera was removed but left hanging. Both cameras have been replaced and are fully functional again.
• 17 February – A stolen perimeter camera was reported in Sturke Street. Footage of the incident (dated 2 February) was obtained and provided to SAPS.
• 25 February – Suspicious activity – Wolhuter Street. An alarm was disarmed while the resident was at home during the night. Armed response attended following a panic activation. No suspects or evidence were found.
• 27 February – Attempted housebreaking Nederburgh street from the golf course. Marks found on sliding door indicated attempted forced entry. No entry gained

Municipal Bin Days

Residents are reminded not to leave valuable items on the pavement on recycling days. These items do attract unwanted attention and create scope for opportunistic crime with 107 cases logged during the month where, Non-Residents and Waste pickers were escorted out of WCID.

Regional Security Collaboration

As part of WCID’s broader ward security strategy, we continue to support neighboring suburb areas including Oude Westhof and Van Riebeeckshof. Door de Kraal West (approximately 185 homes) has recently joined the network with four new cameras connected to WCID’s monitoring system. This follows a significantly higher break-in rate, 9 times higher, within that suburb area compared to Welgemoed. Strengthening adjacent areas ultimately strengthens the broader security ecosystem we all share.

WCID continues to work closely with SAPS and WCID attended the Sector 1, liaison meeting held on 2^nd February to ensure alignment and WCID also attended the quarterly Safety & Security and local area Drug Action Committee meeting on 24 February in Durbanville.

Greening & Maintenance Update

 MOA Signed with the City’s, Recreation and Parks Department

Welgemoed CID (WCID) has formally concluded a Memorandum of Agreement with the City of Cape Town Recreation & Parks Department. This agreement allows WCID to officially partner with the City to implement supplementary improvements and interventions in public parks and open spaces within our area. In practical terms, this means: WCID can now formally apply to implement approved park upgrades and maintenance initiatives.

Goewerneur Park – Updated

WCID will submit a final plan Goewerneur Park upgrade to the City. Once the approved plan and updated costing proposal are received, these will be shared with residents.

Keeping Sluysken Park Clean and Alcohol-Free

Sluysken Park is one of our most visited parks in Welgemoed. Residents using Sluysken are reminded that all our parks are alcohol free zones. We have noticed an increasing volume of empty alcohol bottles in the park bins. The park is serviced twice a week, and we call on residents to please respect our shared spaces.

City Updates

Logging Service Requests

Residents are encouraged to log municipal service requests directly via the City of Cape Town’s Online eServices portal. The link is available at the top of the WCID website under “LOG A COCT FAULT.” Logging issues via a quick 5 step process, ensures you receive a reference number and allows matters to be formally tracked. Cape Town Water Emergency

The City of Cape Town has advised that dam levels are currently just over 55%, approximately 19% lower than the same time last year. Should winter rainfall not improve, water restrictions may be considered in November of this year.

Shot Hole Borer Beetle Alert

The Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer Beetle has been identified in Durbanville. The City will host an information session at Durbanville Library on 12 March at 17:30.
