For ten days this September, Welgemoed becomes the stage. From 12 to 22 September, the Welgemoed Kunstefees brings together live music, theatre, well-known writers, fascinating conversations, creative workshops and family entertainment, all happening right here in the neighbourhood. There is plenty to choose from, whether you’re looking for a night out, an interesting morning talk, something creative to try or an outing with the family. Many of the events are also free to attend, but you’ll still need to reserve your place.

Music & Theatre
From live music with some of South Africa’s best-known performers to an award-winning stage production, there are several good reasons to plan an evening out. Francois van Coke and Die Heuwels Fantasties take to the stage alongside Hanna de Wet and the Laerskool Welgemoed Senior Choir, while ‘Seun’ brings Wilhelm van der Walt’s acclaimed one-man production, based on Dana Snyman’s book, to the festival.
Talks & Conversations
The Kom Luister en Leef programme creates space for some fascinating conversations, covering health, retirement, urban nature, relationships and even Springbok rugby. Many of these sessions are free, so browse the programme and try a topic you might not usually attend.
Books, Walks & Good Food
Some familiar South African writers and storytellers are coming to Welgemoed. Antjie Krog, Marita van der Vyver and Erns Grundling get things started with Boek en Koek, while Erns will also lead residents through the neighbourhood on the free Welgemoed Camino before an afternoon of potjiekos competition with his family.
Get Creative
The Kunstefees isn’t only about watching and listening. Residents can get involved too, with hands-on sessions including block printing with Tanya Nell, a Matisse-inspired art class with Bernita Kukkuk-Faurie and a free writing workshop with Elsa Winckler.
For the Kids
There’s something especially for younger festival goers too. The Kinderfees at Laerskool Welgemoed brings together children’s theatre and a kermis on Saturday, 19 September, an easy one to put in the family diary.
