Essential infrastructure improvements for Sector 1 Residents

The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Department will soon begin a major pipe replacement project in Welgemoed CID Sector 1, bordered by Trichardt, Hofmeyer, Totius (Nature Reserve), and Plettenberg Streets.

This project forms part of the City’s ongoing investment in maintaining essential water infrastructure to ensure reliability, reduce maintenance disruptions, and improve overall service delivery for residents.

About the Project

Most properties in Section 1 will be included in this upgrade. The work will make use of a trenchless pipe replacement method known as pipe bursting. This innovative technique involves pulling a new pipe through the existing one using a special tool that fractures the old pipe and pushes its fragments into the surrounding soil. The new pipe is installed with minimal surface disruption, reducing the need for extensive excavation.

Project Timeline:

Start date:                              November 2025

Expected completion:         October 2026

Project Areas:

  • Southern Project Section 1: 16Q R3A-04 – View Map Here
  • Northern Project Section 1: 6Q R3A-05 – View Map Here

What Residents Can Expect

Small, localised holes will be dug where existing manholes are located. Work will be carried out using the trenchless relining method, limiting disturbance to roads and pavements. Residents will be contacted by the contractor by means of a letter and will provide site specific details.

Why This Matters

This proactive infrastructure upgrade will strengthen Welgemoed’s water network for years to come. The Welgemoed CID thanks residents for their cooperation and patience during this important project, and we extend our appreciation to the City’s Water and Sanitation Department and Sub-Council 7 for their continued investment in our area.
