City of Cape Town Smart Water Meter Rollout
The City of Cape Town’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Programme will launch in April 2026, introducing smart water meters across the city. As part of this initiative, approximately 83,000 mechanical water meters will be replaced with modern digital meters during the first phase, with an investment of R1.1 billion. These smart meters will improve water management through more accurate readings, early leak detection, and better visibility of water usage.
City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Councillor Zahid Badroodien, explained that the AMI serves as a “large-scale initiative to enhance water management and service delivery using modern water metering technology.”
“Over the next decade, more than 680 000 of the City’s existing mechanical water meters will be replaced by smart AMI water meters, along with the necessary supporting infrastructure to move our metering system into a more modern digital world,” said Badroodien.
Smart Water Meter Rollout rollout in Welgemoed
Welgemoed forms part of the initial rollout in Phase 1, together with Bellville, Door de Kraal, Loevenstein, Kenridge and De Bron. Phase 1 is expected to begin at the end of April 2026 for a three month period.

What to Expect During Installation
If your property is selected:
- Temporary water interruptions may occur during installation
- No cost to residents — installation is funded by the City
- Access to your property will be required for installation
- The appointed contractor for the project is PPD Engineering and Hardware Suppliers.
