Choosing what to study after school is a big decision. While interests and strengths will always play an important role, it also helps to understand where skills are needed and where future opportunities may lie. The City of Cape Town has identified a range of scarce skills needed to support the work and future growth of Cape Town. The list is broader than many young people may expect, covering engineering, information technology, finance, environmental sciences, healthcare, the built environment, logistics and technical trades, among others.

Could a City Bursary Help You Get There?

The city is actively contributing to the develop these skills by providing bursaries to qualifying Cape Town students studying in identified scarce-skill fields. Applications for the City’s 2027 External Financial Support programme closes on 31 August 2026, with assistance available towards registration, examination and class fees.
