As part of a broader City-wide programme, the City of Cape Town has deployed new Neighbourhood Safety Officers to Ward 70 , and are now active within Welgemoed. This initiative forms part of the City’s reworked safety budget, announced by Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis in June 2025, Read Here, aimed at increasing ward-based law enforcement visibility, across Cape Town.
The new Neighbourhood Safety Officers are mandated to enforce traffic laws, municipal by-laws, and support crime prevention through visible ward-based policing. They operate independently of the Welgemoed CID and form part of the City’s formal law enforcement structure, bringing additional authority and enforcement capacity into our ward.
Supporting Existing Safety and Traffic Efforts of WCID
This development strengthens the work already underway in Welgemoed. WCID Public Safety Officers (PSOs) continue to provide visible patrols across sectors, monitor activity, and log traffic violations and congestion concerns, particularly around the Welgemoed Forum precinct and Taxi Pick-up and Drop-Off Zone. These observations assist with identifying patterns and supporting structured follow-up.
In addition, our MES teams clean daily in and around the Taxi Pick-up and Drop-Off Zone area to maintain order and cleanliness in this busy space. The introduction of the new Neighbourhood Safety Officers adds formal enforcement authority alongside WCID’s ongoing operational efforts.
A Reminder on Traffic Compliance for residents
With increased enforcement now active in the ward, residents are encouraged to ensure full compliance with traffic regulations.
This includes:
- Coming to a complete stop at stop streets
- Parking legally and facing the correct direction in streets
- Ensuring vehicle licence discs are valid and clearly displayed
- Avoiding restricted or no-parking zones
These regulations apply equally to residents, visitors, contractors, and service providers. The Ward-allocated Safety Officers have the authority to issue fines where violations occur, and enforcement activity has already commenced. Welgemoed CID welcomes the continued strengthening of safety initiatives within our ward and looks forward to working alongside City structures in support of a safer and more orderly community.
