Welgemoed in Focus | January
Welgemoed CID teams continue to maintain proactive oversight and coordination across Welgemoed. Throughout the month, our teams maintained active safety and operational oversight. Overall incident volumes were lower than our previous January period.
A message from Anika Nell, Chairperson of Welgemoed CID.
“2026 is an exciting year for Welgemoed CID. As we continue our second term, we are launching one of our first capital projects as a CID, and the level of community involvement has been truly encouraging. We’ve seen record participation from residents, and we look forward to working together to deliver a project the whole community can be proud of.
From a safety perspective, our teams have reported a lower-than-usual number of incidents compared to the same period last year, as reflected in the snapshot below. While any incident is taken seriously, residents can be assured that each is investigated and that our operational focus is continuously adjusted in response.
Thank you once again for your ongoing involvement, engagement, and support. We look forward to a positive and productive year ahead for Welgemoed residents”
— Anika Nell, Chairperson, Welgemoed CID
Monthly Safety & Operational Snapshot

The snapshot above reflects verified incidents and service matters recorded during the month. These figures inform WCID’s operational focus, coordination efforts, and forward planning.
Community Safety Snapshot
January saw one housebreaking and four theft incidents recorded across the CID. While any incident is taken seriously, overall activity was lower when compared to previous years.
- Housebreaking (9 January): An unknown individual accessed a property via a side entrance and stole a laptop. No forced entry was recorded.
- Theft incidents:
• Bicycle stolen in Goewerneur Street
• Camera removed from an exterior wall in Trichardt Street
• Theft from a building site garage in Van Jaarsveld Street
• Tools stolen from a container in Grey Street — suspects successfully arrested
Welgemoed CID continues to work closely with SAPS, with a Sector 1 liaison meeting, held on 2nd February to ensure alignment and shared awareness.
Problem Areas & Collective Responsibility – Why reporting still matters.
The Transnet Grounds remain a challenge, with ongoing reports of bush sleepers, fires, and littering. These incidents highlight why consistent logging across the Welgemoed CID, and Transnet grounds is essential. Keeping these areas clean and actively managed reduces risk, of crime and fires, for the entire neighborhood.
Goewerneur Park: Community Voices Shaping the Design
The Goewerneur Park community meeting held on 15 January, together with the survey, received an excellent response, 172 residents participated in the survey.
Key priorities echoed by the community and already reflected in the Concept design include:
- Open grass areas for informal play
- Picnic and reading spaces
- Improved safety through fencing
- Exercise elements
- Swings and additional tree planting
Some suggestions, while valuable, cannot be implemented due to City considerations:
- Public toilets (not approved in small residential parks)
- Certain water activity elements (health, safety, and long-term operational risks and costs)
Once the final design is approved by The City, it will be shared with residents. Budget context and project deliverables will also be circulated for feedback from residents once received.
Greening & Maintenance
January maintenance included:
- Clearing of the Jip de Jager road reserve from Eksteen to Kommissaris robots
- Ongoing vegetation management and visibility clearing
- Seasonal upkeep following unseasonal summer rains
These efforts support safety, storm water flow, and the overall appearance of the suburb.
Working with the City
The Welgemoed CID logged 16 incidents (known as C3s) with 7 related to water outages.
Governance & Financial Oversight
- Welgemoed CID costs remain well within our budgeted expectations, year-to-date
- An adjusted budget review will be completed by 31 March for the current financial year
Community Highlights
The Christmas tree has been taken down, and the stationery collected during the festive season has been distributed to local schools, closing off a generous community effort on a meaningful note.
Looking Ahead
