WCID continued its support of Tygerberg Nature Reserve during September, with a 12-person team removing Patterson’s curse and other weeds along the reserve perimeter towards Trichardt Street.
The work forms part of WCID’s broader Greening Portfolio, which includes the care and restoration of natural areas in Welgemoed, the planting of thousands of indigenous plants and ongoing work to protect locally important plant species.
This support now extends to Tygerberg Nature Reserve, an important natural area on Welgemoed’s doorstep. The 388-hectare reserve protects the largest conserved remnant of critically endangered Swartland Shale Renosterveld and is home to an extraordinary 562 plant species. Of these, 23 are threatened, eight are endemic to Cape Town and three are found only at Tygerberg.

By assisting with work along the reserve boundary, WCID is able to contribute practical resources to the important conservation work already being undertaken there, while continuing our own efforts to care for and strengthen Welgemoed’s natural areas.
