This past weekend, the streets around Imhoff Park in Welgemoed came alive as thousands of people gathered for our annual Welgemoed Straatwinkel. With more than 100 stalls servicing an estimated 5,000 visitors, the event was nothing short of a triumph of community spirit. More than just a market, the Welgemoed Straatwinkel has become a platform where neighbours, businesses, and organisations come together.
Wat die Straatwinkel besonders maak, is sy hart. Dit bied ’n platform nie net vir ervare stalletjiehouers nie, maar dit bied ook jong entrepreneurs die kans om vaardighede en idees te toets en gee die gemeenskap ’n platform om saam fondse in te samel vir betekenisvolle inisiatiewe wat mense se lewens raak.
None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of our sponsors, whose contributions laid the foundation for success. A big thanks to Fidelity ADT for providing security before and during the event, Pam Golding Properties and VST Attorneys for the music bands, Realtors Group for the children’s entertainment, Rawson for funding the safety and medical services, and Kainos Properties for supporting the in-depth history of the suburb of Welgemoed.
Met dank aan ons ongelooflike organiseerders, almal vrywilligers, wie se harde werk en spanpoging die Welgemoed Straatwinkel in ’n dag vol kleur, warmte en gemeenskapsgees omskep het.
Magicians kept the youngest visitors enthralled, while families strolled together between stalls, neighbours caught up over coffee, and teenagers enjoyed the freedom of wandering from stall to stall with friends and the joy of youthful companionship. The atmosphere was festive, with something for everyone to enjoy.
Among the many heartfelt fundraising efforts was that of a resident who chose to support a local family caring for their child living with the rare disorder, Rett Syndrome. To assist, the resident offered face painting on the day, with the aim of raising R13 000 for specialised equipment needed by the child. As children happily queued for their turn, one generous family was so moved by the cause that they contributed R10 000 toward the target. By the end of the day, enough had been raised to place the order for the equipment, a wonderful reminder that, together, every contribution, large or small, can change lives.
This year’s Straatwinkel featured a variety of fundraisers, each supporting a cause close to the heart. The Animal Anti-Cruelty League and Pet Hope raised awareness and funds to improve the lives of animals and the people who care for them. Down with Dough showcased how baking equips young adults with intellectual disabilities to become more self-sufficient and confident.
Grace in Action, a dedicated group of ladies from Protea Valley Church, shared their inspiring community work. And Tanya Nell, now in her fourth year of fundraising, once again brought her energy and commitment to the cause. In addition the hay bales used on the market day were donated to Roscan Sanctum, an all-volunteer village in the Karoo restoring hope. We can agree that together, these initiatives all added depth and purpose to the festive spirit of the day.
