The City of Cape Town has installed new smart speed-calming signs along Jip de Jager, giving drivers real-time feedback on their speed to help reduce speeding through Welgemoed.

These signs were first successfully trialed by the City’s Urban Mobility Directorate along High Level Road in Sea Point. As vehicles approach, the smart signs use radar to detect the vehicle’s speed and displays it instantly, a simple visual cue that was shown to encourage most drivers to slow down.

This installation forms part of the final phase of the Jip de Jager road upgrade, following a request from Subcouncil 7 to adopt the same proven technology used elsewhere in the city. The goal is to improve driver awareness and enhance safety along one of Welgemoed’s busiest arterial routes.

Why This Matters

Jip de Jager carries heavy daily traffic, with schools, residential streets, cyclists, and pedestrians all sharing the corridor. The new signs are already making a visible difference, increasing driver awareness of their actual speed thereby improving safety for residents, runners, and cyclists moving through the area
