Sluysken Park came alive this past weekend as Welgemoed residents gathered to celebrate the opening of the Free Mini Library, a community-led initiative that has already begun to shape the park into a more connected and engaging space. From the outset, the atmosphere reflected exactly what the initiative set out to achieve. Families settled into the park, children moved between the jungle gym and the gathering area, and residents spent time together on the lawn, creating a relaxed and welcoming environment.

A highlight of the morning was the live reading by Bianca Flanders. Her reading of Princess Pampoenpit held the children’s attention throughout, bringing energy and focus to the event and creating a shared moment for families in attendance.

At the centre of the initiative are two purpose-built library cabinets, one dedicated to children’s books and the other catering for older readers. Together, they give practical form to a simple idea: take a book, share a book. The concept is accessible, but its value lies in what it enables, a growing, shared resource that encourages reading while strengthening everyday connections between residents.

The real strength of the project lies in how it came together. The library structures were built by Co Jonker and Kabelo Seepamore. The visual identity, from the painted finishes to the signage, was led by Tanya Nell, supported by Louise Ferreira and her children, giving the installation a distinctive and personal character.

The initiative was brought together through a broader community effort, with residents contributing books, refreshments, and support on the day. The participation of Bianca Flanders was arranged by Marieta, while the overall project concept and coordination were led by Maria.

The strong turnout and atmosphere spoke for themselves. It was a clear demonstration of how Sluysken Park is evolving into a space where the community can connect, unwind, and spend time together. With such a strong start, there is clear momentum to build on, and every indication that this will not be the last gathering around the Mini Library.
