Restoring the Transnet Grounds and Door De Kraal Dam

This past weekend, the Welgemoed CID, together with volunteers from SALT Projects, the Wildflower Stepping Stone Group (WSSP), and the City of Cape Town, joined forces for another successful community cleanup and alien hack.

The Transnet grounds were thoroughly cleared and cleaned, while teams at the Door de Kraal Dam focused on the dam wall, removing Patterson’s Curse and other invasive species. The Wildflower Stepping Stone Group team concentrated on weeding and clearing areas around the stepping-stone flower project, ensuring space for local wildflowers to thrive. Paths leading to the Door de Kraal dam’s wooden island were also cleaned and rehabilitated, bringing new life to one of Welgemoed’s most scenic natural corners.

Meanwhile, the alien hack team tackled Brazilian Pepper and Bottlebrush trees, cutting, treating, and clearing large amounts of invasive vegetation. The City’s CCT clearing team followed up to remove waste, keeping the momentum strong.

A Community United in Action

More than 30 volunteers from SALT Projects, 6 Welgemoed CID Action Team and MES members, and residents from WSSP, including André, Anel, François, and Unati, rolled up their sleeves to make it happen, joined by local families, including one resident and her kids who arranged the delivery of cooldrinks to the teams using Sixty60, highlighting that we all can contribute in various ways.

Thank You to the incredible teams on the day.

A heartfelt thank-you to:

  • The SALT Projects volunteers, who worked tirelessly to remove masses of Patterson’s Curse.
  • The WCID crew, for cutting down invasive trees and supporting logistics.
  • The WSSP team, for sharing their expertise and guiding volunteers.
  • Unati from CCT, for her coordination and hands-on involvement.
  • Residents Nicolette and Gerhard, for sponsoring and delivering refreshing cooldrinks.
  • Heidri, for organising and serving the delicious food that kept everyone energised.

Looking Ahead

A huge amount was achieved, but there’s still plenty more to do! Each cleanup brings us closer to restoring our local ecosystems, protecting biodiversity, and creating safe, beautiful public spaces for all. We encourage residents to join future cleanup events, even a few hours of help makes a big difference. Together, we’re showing what community in action truly looks like.
