Welgemoed CID in Focus | June 2026

Welgemoed continues to move forward through steady progress, practical projects and an engaged community. This month we share encouraging public safety trends, updates on key improvement projects, and the ongoing work taking place across our public spaces as we continue building a better Welgemoed for all.

Public safety remains one of WCID’s highest priorities, the first half of 2026 has delivered encouraging results. While every incident remains one too many, Welgemoed continues to experience fewer serious incidents and house break-ins than in previous years, reflecting a sustained improvement in the suburb’s public safety environment.

These results reflect the value of a coordinated public safety approach, combining active monitoring, visible patrols, strong partnerships with our security partners and SAPS, and an engaged community that continues to report concerns and remain vigilant. We are very appreciative of the hard work our teams put in each day to ensure our safety.

The longer-term trend in Welgemoed is particularly encouraging. House Break-ins have reduced to only three house break-ins recorded during the first six months of 2026. While we never become complacent, these figures reflect the value of the sustained investment, partnership and community involvement over many years.

Last month, WCID communicated with residents regarding several governance and oversight matters. Following further engagement, we acknowledge that our previous communication remains unchanged and we consider that matter concluded. The Board remains focused on its mandate of delivering services, maintaining sound governance, and working constructively with the community.

MONTHLY SAFETY & OPERATIONAL SNAPSHOT

The snapshot below reflects verified incidents and service activity recorded during the month, informing WCID’s operational priorities.

1. COMMUNITY SAFETY UPDATE

Maintaining a safer suburb requires constant effort. Despite ongoing crime challenges across Cape Town, Welgemoed has continued to experience a sustained reduction in house break-in incidents over the past two years.

House break-ins reduced from 49 in 2024 to 25 in 2025, with just three house break-ins recorded during the first six months of 2026. Non-serious incidents have also continued their downward trend, reflecting the value of a coordinated public safety approach.

These results are supported by active camera monitoring, a dedicated control room, visible Public Safety Officers, strong partnerships with Fidelity ADT and SAPS, and residents who continue to report concerns and remain vigilant. While no public safety programme can eliminate crime entirely, these combined efforts continue to support a safer Welgemoed for All.

Notable Incidents

Several incidents during the reporting period demonstrated the value of coordinated response, CCTV monitoring and partnership between residents and the public safety team.

• Saffraan Street: A resident reported the theft of a green waste drum. CCTV footage enabled the Control Room to identify the suspect vehicle, which was then flagged on the Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) system. When the vehicle returned to Welgemoed the following day, it was intercepted by a Public Safety Officer resulting in the the vehicle owner returning the drum to its owner.
• Kommandeur Street: A one-ton truck was reported stolen during the early hours of the morning. LPR footage identified the vehicle leaving the suburb, and two other related vehicles were also flagged and added to the LPR system, should they enter Welgemoed again. The stolen vehicle’s tracking system led to its successful recovery shortly afterwards.

Strengthening Our Operational Fleet

Residents may notice a few new additions travelling through Welgemoed over the coming weeks. WCID is pleased to have taken delivery of two new Public Safety Officer vehicles, equipped to support our teams as they continue delivering visible patrols and rapid response across Welgemoed CID. If you see our officers out and about, don’t hesitate to give them a friendly wave.

WCID Greening has also welcomed a dedicated operational vehicle to support the growing demands of WCID’s environmental portfolio. As Welgemoed continues to invest in more parks, public spaces and biodiversity initiatives, the dedicated vehicle will help our teams respond more efficiently and care for these areas as they continue to grow.

Our newest greening vehicle is ready to get to work across Welgemoed, but it still needs a name. We invite residents to send their best suggestions to info@welgemoedcid.co.za. We can’t wait to see what our community comes up with!

Refuse Collection Reminders

The City of Cape Town has reminded residents of a few important refuse collection guidelines to help keep collections running smoothly. Refuse bins should be placed on the pavement by 06h00 on collection day, including public holidays. Residents are encouraged to always keep bins secure. If a bin is stolen, the theft should be reported to SAPS and the case number retained. Damaged or stolen bins will generally be replaced by The City, except where negligence is involved.

Residents are also reminded, that if bins are overloaded and don’t close properly, that they will not be emptied. In addition, please don’t place builder’s rubble, stones, sand, oil, metal components, hazardous materials or liquids in refuse bins, as these items can damage collection vehicles and equipment. Excess garden refuse, builder’s rubble and other unsuitable waste can be disposed of free of charge at the City’s municipal drop-off facilities.

2. URBAN MANAGEMENT & MUNICIPAL COORDINATION

Goewerneur Park Community Meeting

Planning continues for the future of Goewerneur Park, with WCID inviting residents to an online community engagement meeting on 7 July. The session will provide an opportunity to discuss the proposed improvement plans and help shape a public space that balances recreation, biodiversity and the needs of the broader community.

Jip de Jager Median Landscaping

Residents will have noticed the landscaping improvements underway along the Jip de Jager median. This collaborative project between the City of Cape Town, Truform Landscape Architects and Contour Landscapes covers the section from Mara Road to the Van Riebeeckshof intersection. WCID would like to thank Tree-S-Cape for the careful shaping of the Ekebergia trees and the Wildflower Stepping Stones Project Team for their continued support in helping enhance this important gateway into Welgemoed.

A Wonderful First Parkie Markie

The first Young Entrepreneurs Parkie Markie at Sluysken Vliegtuigpark exceeded all expectations. What began as a simple idea to give local children an opportunity to experience entrepreneurship quickly grew into a vibrant community morning filled with learning, creativity and connection. We look forward to seeing this initiative grow in the future.

 

 

CARING FOR OTHERS

 Welgemoed NG Kerk Supports Magdalena Home

Welgemoed NG Kerk will once again be supporting expectant mothers at Magdalena Home on 15 July. Residents are invited to assist by contributing essential baby and personal care items, or through financial donations towards the care packages prepared for the mothers. These goodie bags provide practical support and encouragement during an important stage of their lives.  Residents wishing to contribute can contact Heidri Mittendorf for further information.

Aksie Omgee Food Hampers – July 2026 holiday

Welgemoed CID donated food hampers to Aksie Omgee. The food hampers are donated to pupils who find themselves in a difficult situation and require assistance. The hampers go to a great cause the parents and pupils appreciate the generosity and support, giving not only sustenance but hope as well.

Supporting Durbanville Children’s Home

WCID is pleased to support improvements at Durbanville Children’s Home. The project upgraded outdoor areas around the children’s living units with paving, creating safer and weather-resistant access while improving the children’s everyday environment.

The initiative reflects WCID’s commitment to supporting practical projects that benefit vulnerable children and recognises the contribution of Welgemoed residents who volunteer their time at the home, including through weekend foster care and the Therapy Dog Programme. WCID contributed R22,340 towards the project and is proud to support initiatives that strengthen community wellbeing and make a lasting difference.
