Community spaces work best when they reflect the needs of the people who use them. As part of an ongoing review of the Saffraan Street stairs access, Welgemoed CID is inviting residents to share their views before any decisions are made.

The WCID is considering whether the gate at the Saffraan Street stairs should remain open or be locked. Before making any decision, we’d like to understand how residents use this access and what they believe is the best long-term solution for the community.

The access route was originally installed by the City of Cape Town to provide a direct pedestrian link between the bus stop on Jip de Jager Drive and Saffraan St. The stairs and gate are monitored by 24-hour CCTV surveillance. While this assists with monitoring activity and gathering evidence when required, it does not prevent unauthorised access or through traffic. The gate is currently locked each night from 20:00 to 05:00.
